JFK barges
at some point in the next few weeks, the remaining crew of the USS John F. Kennedy will be moving off the ship and onto barges pulled up along side the ship. They and contractors will basically be mothballing the aircraft carrier. What I've heard is that all kinds of ships services, including the dental clinic, will still be provided either on the barges or pier side.
We'd love to hear from JFK sailors and their families about what these barges are like. Feel free to post comments here on the blog or e-mail me at jeff.brumley@jacksonville.com.

Jeff,
My son lived on one of these barges when he was first assigned to the USS JFK for several months. I can't really recall anything he might have said about them good or bad, he had been living in dorms at Great Lakes. There are a couple of photos on the Navy site of the USS JFK in June 2003 during their extended dockside repairs with the barge next to the ship. The big gray thing. When I was visited him at the base in Mayport I saw a couple of them, they were in pretty bad shape, he did say the one he lived in was nicer.
So these are barges with bunkrooms and kitchens and heads and so forth, I assume, right? I wonder if they were constructed from the beginning as housing barges, or converted to that use. Hey thanks for writing in.
